THE mother of murdered police woman Nicola Hughes has praised her local community for supporting an event in her daughter’s memory.
Scores of families took part in a day of song, music and laughter in Diggle to mark the second anniversary of the death of Nicola and her colleague PC Fiona Bone, who died in a grenade and gun attack while investigating a hoax burglary.
The event was staged at the Hanging Gate pub by Chasing Rainbows, the fundraising group set up by the Diggle officer’s family and friends.. Scores of enthusiastic onlookers cheered more than 80 entrants in a sponsored 10k run from Stalybridge to Diggle, and 40 participants in a four-mile walk from Mossley to the village.
The afternoon event continued with children’s activities, dancing, a barbecue live music and a charity auction.
Sue Hughes, Nicola’s mother, said: “It’s been a fabulous day. Everyone really enjoyed themselves. It has been a real pleasure to give something back to them all for their support.”
The memorial day, an annual event, raised money for the North-West Police Benevolent Fund and The Firefighters Charity.
