Shoplifters targeted in police crackdown
Date published: 03 October 2014
A CRACKDOWN on shoplifting is being launched by Oldham police in the run-up to Christmas.
Operation Snowboard will see officers run high-visibility patrols in the town centre. Police will also use radio contact with retailers and CCTV operators to help prevent shoplifting and pickpocketing.
Sergeant Danny Atherton, of the Oldham Central Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We are working with Oldham Council to combat criminal activity and to ensure the town is a safe and pleasant place to be.”
On Saturday purse bells — which make a noise if a thief tries to steal a purse from a handbag will be handed out by special constables and police cadets.
Ultraviolet marker pens will also be given out so people can mark personal items such as mobile phones, tablets and laptops.
