MP demands total ban on nuisance calls

OLDHAM MP Michael Meacher is demanding a blanket opt-out ban on nuisance calls.
The Oldham West and Royton MP said constituents received dozens of calls a day and that some vulnerable people could be pressed into believing they had money to be reclaimed or could be drawn into buying something they didn’t need.
The Labour veteran said: “While there is a process to assist with the problem through opting out, many people — particularly the elderly — are not able to do this.
“It appears over-complicated to force people to opt out rather than to opt in to any scheme. I believe tighter controls are required to stop the constant barrage of unsolicited marketing calls.”
Households can register with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) which should ensure the calls stop within 28 days. It is illegal for unsolicited marketing calls to continue.
Last month Oldham Council called on the Government to strengthen the regulatory framework regarding nuisance calls. It wants people to opt in rather than out and to stop phone number lists being sold.
