Fallen soldiers remembered
Date published: 10 October 2014
A TOUCHING ceremony to mark the deaths of a World War One band of brothers featured in a commemorative book will take place in Saddleworth on Sunday.
Men from the Manchester Regiment will assemble at the soldiers’ graves in St Anne’s Churchyard, Lydgate to hear prayers from the Rev John Rosedale, chaplain to the local branch of the Royal British Legion and a former RAF officer.
The book, “The Boys From The Top Of The Hill”, gives a moving insight into the men’s lives and bravery.
Love Lydgate, the community association, plans to turn the hamlet into a poignant red ribbon of remembrance in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the First World War.
And during remembrance week next month, scores of hand-knitted poppies made by locals will decorate cottages, gardens and hedgerows.
