Benefit delay blasted

OLDHAMERS wait 10 days longer than other residents to find out if they will get housing benefit.

Oldham West and Royton MP Michael Meacher says the delays are unacceptable and cause additional stress for struggling families.

According to Government figures, between April and June this year it took an average 24 days nationally for a benefit decision, but 34 days in Oldham.

Mr Meacher said: “The time discrepancy is considerable, we are talking almost two additional weeks in Oldham. People need to be dealt with quickly so they can budget and know how much money they have to find suitable accommodation.

“People already are struggling with the cost of living crisis and they need to know as quickly as possible what help is available to them.”

Oldham ranked third in Greater Manchester for the longest wait, behind Wigan on 44 days and 36 days in Salford. But Trafford residents get a decision in only 16 days.
