Historic chapel restored to its former glory

AFTER 10 years of campaigning, Age UK Oldham has breathed new life into the George Street Methodist Chapel.

The Grade II-listed, two-storey chapel, built in 1815, opened its doors on Friday after undergoing extensive restoration and conversion. The disused chapel is now seen as a key piece of the town’s heritage.

The building was bought by Age UK Oldham almost a decade ago and has been revived with a £950,000 Heritage Lottery grant to become an Oldham heritage centre.

Age UK Oldham chief Yvonne Lee said opening the building “felt like a dream”.

“When we heard, years ago, that it was in danger of being lost we had to step in and make use of it.

“Being here in the building today feels incredible, after so much effort and passion it all feels worthwhile to see what has been achieved. We felt a need to have somewhere in Oldham that celebrates the history of the town, and we are really proud to have achieved that.”

The building will also be available for hire for weddings and other events.

Mrs Lee added: “The support has been amazing. Everyone has really pulled together to make this happen and that really is great.”

Actor Arthur Bostrom attended the opening and also provided the voiceover for a video played at the event.

He said: “It’s a beautiful building, they have done something truly special here. I’m a huge supporter of projects like this.”
