Family history service eases cancer worries

A SPECIALIST Oldham service is helping to ease fears over hereditary cancer risks.
The Cancer Family History Service, run by Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, helps people worried they might have an increased risk of developing cancer because family members had the disease.
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the campaign is urging anyone with concerns about their health to speak to their GP or a health professional.
Melanie Ripley, Clinical Nurse Specialist at Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, said: “It’s important to remember that statistically, only a small percentage of people — between three and 10 per cent — with a family history of cancer will have inherited a genetic condition.
“But a higher percentage of patients will need early breast or bowel screening if their family history shows they have increased risk. People should be aware that family history is relevant from both the mother’s and father’s side of the family, even with breast cancer.”
Oldhamers can be referred to the service by their GP, or contact the service directly on 0161-909 8537.
