REJECTED: the former Yew Trees Residential Home won’t become single-room flats
Oldham Planning Committee
A CONTROVERSIAL proposal to turn a former care home into a 19-bedroom shared accommodation block has been rejected by councillors.
Plans for the site at the former Yew Trees Residential Home, on Sycamore Avenue, Chadderton, raised concerns among residents.
Company Simple Living wanted to turn the building into new-style apartments offering single-room rented flats with shared bathrooms and kitchens. Nine of the bedrooms were to be ensuite, with two communal lounges and a laundry room. Simple Living claimed its tenants would not disrupt the peaceful community they wanted to share.
But in September a 250-strong petition opposed the development, leading to deferral of discussion by the committee in October. Residents were concerned about local access and increased traffic.
Ward councillor Dave Hibbert said: “The developer comes across as very considerate, but the problem will be a long-running battle with neighbours. I’m sure nobody wants that.”
Eight of the 13 councillors rejected the proposals on the grounds of highway safety.
