Flicking the festive switch

THOUSANDS lined town-centre streets to see Oldham’s Christmas lights switched on in style.
“Britain’s Got Talent” favourites Bars and Melody were the star attraction as crowds alongside local singer Naomi Higginson and children’s TV favourites Ben Elf and Princess Holly.
The Mayor, Councillor Fida Hussain, pushed the plunger to turn on the lights with town-centre mascots Ollie and Millie, and following the switch-on a spectacular firework display lt up the sky.
Shoppers were entertained throughout the day by street artists, fairground rides, games and stalls selling festive treats.
Council leader Jim McMahon said: “It was a fantastic turnout w,ith easily over 20,000 people in the town centre. The Coliseum panto has started and the lights are on; we’re definitely in the festive mood now!”
