Power surges cause blasts
Date published: 01 December 2014
LOUD explosions woke families in Oldham overnight, causing windows to shake, alarms to go off and manhole covers to be blown into the road.
Two explosions were recorded in Ripponden Road shortly after midnight and could be heard a mile away.
The explosions are believed to have been caused by a fault in an electrical link box in the area, causing a power surge.
The road was closed for a short time as Greater Manchester Police, firefighters, Electricity North West and Oldham Council investigated and made the area safe.
