Members of a cancer support group have been “overwhelmed” by supporters after announcing the group might have to close.

The Oldham Cancer Aid Network (CAN) appealed in the Chronicle for help after discovering it was only three months away from closureing due to a lack of money.

But since the story appeared the group has been inundated wit offers of help and money, with donations ranging from £10 to £800.

Vera Dolan, who runs the group, said: “It has been quite amazing. I’ve had calls from lots of different people offering their support. We are now hopeful about our future; the money means we can continue for another year.”

One anonymous woman gave the group £800, while Ambassador Textiles in Huddersfield Road will give £100 a month for the next six months. Group members say around £1,500 has already been pledged.

The group, now in its 19th year, meets on the first and third Tuesday of the month, 4pm-6.15pm, at South Chadderton Methodist Church and is open to anyone affected by cancer, either as a patient, carer, family member or medical worker.

Donations are still being accepted. Contact Vera on 01457-874 927.
