POLITICIANS have urged Oldhamers to support local traders during Small Business Saturday tomorrow.

Oldham East and Saddleworth MP Debbie Abrahams popped in to Swirly Twirly Sweets shop in Oldham town centre to start her Christmas shopping and show her support for this year’s campaign.

Small Business Saturday (SBS) is a grass-roots campaign that encourages people to shop locally.

Last year it was the biggest celebration of small businesses in the UK and gave a boost to local shops through extra trade of nearly £500 million.

Mrs Abrahams said: “It is so important that we support our small and independent businesses in Oldham and Saddleworth. They are a vital part of our local economy, our community and a source of jobs so we really need to get behind them and show our support.

“Our local businesses are doing a fantastic job and they give us greater choice and that something a little bit special.”

Swirly Twirly Sweets, in Manchester Chambers, was selected as one of the Small Business Saturday top 100 businesses featured in this year’s campaign.
