OLDHAM town centre’s Hobson Street multi-storey car park has been closed until further notice after an inspection found the need for immediate repair work.
Motorists can use spaces in Bow Street, Bradshaw Street, Civic Centre, Southgate Street, Sports Centre, Tommyfield Market, Waterloo Street and New Radcliffe Street (disabled only).
Spaces are also available in the Spindles town centre car park and Bloom Street.
Councillor Jean Stretton, cabinet member for town centres, culture and tourism, said: “Unfortunately we have no other option than to close Hobson Street car park.
“Public safety is always the most important consideration.
“It’s not ideal timing in the run up to Christmas but plenty of other parking provision is available across the town centre.
“Hobson Street is generally underused by the public.
“The main users are council staff and employees from partner organisations who have paid for permits.
“They are being offered alternative parking options at one of four car parks - Bow Street, Bradshaw Street, Southgate Street and Waterloo Street. We will be assessing our options in the days ahead and will release further information when we have it.”
Hobson Street car park underwent a £1.4 million in 2006 in a 20-week project between Oldham Council and transport services group, NCP.
The improvements to the seven-storey car park, which was built in 1969 at a cost of £241,000, included new lighting, CCTV cameras and general building improvements.
