Village gridlock as lorry gets jammed
Date published: 16 December 2014
Lorry wedged at Junction of King Street and Grains Road Delph
A lorry brought more than three hours of chaos to a Saddleworth village yesterday when it jammed across a main route.
The articulated HGV was attempting to enter Delph from Grains Road on to King Street when it collided with the gable end of a house.
With the lorry straddling the junction, police closed the road from both ends of the village forcing frustrated travellers to find alternative routes to the M62.
The closure also caused disruption on key bus routes leading an angry Saddleworth councillor to condemn lorry drivers who ignore weight restriction warnings on approaches to the village.
Councillor Alan Roughley, who lives at Denshaw, said: “This is far from being the first time heavy trucks have snarled up the centre of Delph through ignoring the weight restriction signs at Grains Bar and the Denshaw crossroads.
“The only way change will come is when and if Oldham Council accepts its responsibilities and improves the signage and prosecutes those who ignore them.”
