Head teacher back in the saddle

A BADLY broken ankle didn’t stop head teacher Mike McGhee making it into school for the last day of term.
He was determined to visit Newman College, Broadway, after a cycling accident four weeks ago. The 51-year-old had surgery to fit pins and plates to his left ankle on December 10. A keen cyclist, he said: “I was doing a 25-mile ride, which I do quite regularly, when I slipped on some debris in a park.
“It was quite innocuous but I wasn’t able to right myself and I knew straight away I had broken my ankle because my foot was at a funny angle. I am recovering well but I am missing school very much, especially at this time of year.”
Chris Foley, senior deputy head teacher, has now stepped up to acting head.
