A BRASS band conductor is celebrating after winning a new wheelchair during an Oldham conference championing the rights of carers in the borough.
Michael Donnelly (73) was delighted to pick up the grand prize at the event, organised by local charity Wired Oldham, which marked Carers Rights Day in November.
The UK-wide initiative gives carers guidance and awareness of their rights while celebrating the work of carers - including 5,000 in Oldham - who spend much of their lives looking after a friend, relative or neighbour.
Michael, who is a life-long diabetes patient and a former engineer, attended the conference with Royton-based carer Norma Ashton, who is playing an increasing role in helping him to remain independent.
Norma (68) said: “Michael believes he can do anything and I want him to continue to do things – but in a safe way. It’s about making sure he is more careful.”
