Petition launched as squash feels squeeze
Date published: 30 December 2014
A squash player has launched a petition to get Oldham Council to include dedicated courts at the new Oldham Sports Centre.
Asif Lohdi is a regular user of the current facilities and is shocked that the authority hasn’t included courts in the plans. Oldham’s new £15 million centre is due to open in autumn 2015.
Mr Lohdi said: “We have started a petition against Oldham Council because they are not having squash courts in the new sports centre.
“Hundreds of players in the area will have no squash facilities in the whole district. I play with friends and we are all really disappointed there won’t be any courts.”
A council review concluded squash courts couldn’t be included on cost grounds. The council’s planning looked into the provision of public and pivate facilities not just in Oldham but around the immediate area.
The new building will be built on the former Aldi supermarket site at the junction of Manchester Street and St Domingo Street.
