Boost to help plug borough’s potholes
Date published: 30 December 2014
OLDHAM Council could get up to £1 million to help plug potholes across the borough.
As part of a Government fund that has pledged almost £6 billion to local councils over the next six years, Oldham will be given the funds to help eradicate potholes between 2015-2021.
The initiative comes only six months after Oldham received £812,000 from a Severe Weather Recovery Fund to repair major routes and unclassified roads.
This latest cash injection was announced by Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin; but only £4.7 billion will be shared across 115 councils initially. Another £575 million will be made available for council bids to cover repairs and maintenance of local highway infrastructure such as junctions, bridges and street lighting.
An additional £578 million will also be set aside for an incentive scheme to start in 2016, aimed at rewarding councils who carry out cost-effective improvements.
