“AN acknowledgement of the important work done in the social work profession” was how Shabana Abasi described her MBE.
The 49 year old, originally from Glodwick, is head of Greater Manchester’s Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (CAFCASS) and was rewarded for her services to children in Greater Manchester.
A qualified social worker for 25 years, Shabana moved to CAFCASS as a frontline practitioner, working directly with families, in 2003.
CAFCASS promotes the safeguarding of children in court, both in public and private family law proceedings.
She said: “Our focus is not on what parents want, but on what is best for the children and to act as a strong voice for their wellbeing.”
Shabana is also involved with the Pakistani Resource Centre, and is a trustee and director of the Community on Solid Ground charity, an organisation that works with youth groups.
Shabana said: “I’m absolutely delighted and honoured to receive this award but it’s not just for me, it’s for the fabulous group of staff that I’m surrounded by.”
