Arlene McCarthy: OBE
FORMER North-West MEP Arlene McCarthy has been recognised with an OBE following a political career spanning over 20 years.
She said: “It’s an honour for the region as a whole. I’ve had a lot of support over the years and I feel I have achieved a lot in my career.
“As politicians we are there to make a difference and I’m proud to receive this honour. It’s an exciting time in Greater Manchester with the devolution deal and I hope to continue playing a part in that going forward.”
The former Labour MEP, was vice-chairman of the European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee and played a pivotal role in the aftermath of the financial crisis that engulfed Europe.
Ms McCarthy now runs a property business alongside her charity and voluntary work.
She said: “I think what’s important is what you do with it. I do a lot of charity and voluntary work and I hope this will be a huge boost to that. I still want to give back and throughout my career it has been working with people that has been the most rewarding.
“I relish being able to support people and help them. I’ve enjoyed every minute of my time representing the North West.”
::ANOTHER Oldhamer to receive and award is Susan Leach, a Government Border Force higher officer, who gets an MBE for services to Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults.
