Four-point plan targets bus drivers’ conduct

OLDHAM’S Liberal Democrat leader has devised a four-point plan to make bus travel a more pleasant experience.
Councillor Howard Sykes, who serves on the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee, made the suggestions to improve the conduct of bus drivers as part of a Department of Transport consultation.
He said: “The vast majority of bus drivers carry out their duties in professional manner, but unfortunately a few don’t. I have received many complaints from bus passengers about misconduct.”
Councillor Sykes has proposed four new obligations for bus drivers:
::To stop where it is clear a passenger is running for a bus stop and has indicated they want to board.
::To prevent drivers driving away from a stop where a disabled or elderly person or someone burdened with luggage, shopping or a buggy has boarded, until the passenger is seated.
::To ensure the correct destination is shown on the bus.
::To ensure drivers don’t display an “Out of Service” sign when they are approaching the end of their route and shift.
Councillor Sykes said: “Bus companies would be responsible for ensuring their drivers adhered to the obligations and irresponsible drivers disregarding them could be subjected to disciplinary action.
“I am sure that all professional bus drivers will welcome them.”
