God-like figure: Brian Cox.
MANY young scientists may already see Oldham physicist Professor Brian Cox as a god-like figure... but he’s now playing the part for real.
The renowned TV presenter is playing God at each performance of Monty Python’s “Spamalot” musical at the Opera House in Manchester which runs to Saturday, January 24 - though not in the flesh.
He appears on film during each show.
The Manchester University professor saw off fierce competition from Brian May, Eric Idle, Hugh Bonneville, Michael Ball and Michael Palin to take the joke role.
Professor Cox said: “It’s a no-brainer. If Eric Idle says to you ‘do you want to be God in Spamalot’ then I’d be surprised if anybody had ever said no.”
The role features in Spamalot when King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table are given their quest to find the Holy Grail.
Professor Cox is appearing in the show to raise funds for The University of Manchester Student Access Programme — which supports entry to the university through the completion of a portfolio of work which demonstrates specific knowledge and skills.
Actor and comedian Joe Pasquale is returning to the role of King Arthur and former “EastEnders” star Todd Carty returns as King Arthur’s manservant Patsy — both played the roles in the West End production.
