New school site chosen

SADDLEWORTH School will controversially move to Diggle following a decision by education chiefs to move from its current Uppermill site.
Land at the back of the former WH Shaw Pallets Works in Diggle has been named as the preferred option by the Education Funding Agency — a decision supported by Saddleworth School and Oldham Council but contrary to the desire of many objectors.
The new school could be open by spring 2017.
The decision follows a feasibility study on four possible locations — two on the existing site in Uppermill and two in Diggle.
Head teacher Matthew Milburn said: “This is a hugely important day for Saddleworth School and the local community.
“We know the location of the new school has been a contentious issue and it was absolutely right that all possible options were evaluated and all interests considered to confirm the best solution.”
