Tributes to former Woman of Oldham

Ruth Roscoe Campbell
Tributes have been paid to former mayoress and 2006 Woman of Oldham Ruth Roscoe Campbell, who has died at 93.
Mrs Campbell was surrounded by her family as she passed away at Aster House sheltered accommodation in Oldham, where she had lived for five years.
Originally from Worsley, Mrs Campbell arrived in Oldham in 1949 when her late husband Colin became the personnel manager at Stotts of Oldham Ltd.
Mrs Campbell worked tirelessly for local charities, raising money for victims of polio and arthritis and especially for the Society for the Blind, a job she continued for over five decades and which saw her named Woman of Oldham in 2006.
She was also involved in local politics, starting when Colin became a councillor, and went on to become Oldham’s first female magistrate.
Her daughter Judith said: “My mother was a remarkable woman, absolutely brilliant right up to the end, and her mind was as sharp as it had always been.”
