LATICS fans dashed to answer a call for volunteers to clear the snow from the ground. Supporters and staff grabbed their shovels on Friday and got stuck in - joined by Chronicle reporter Robbie Gill

It was all hands on deck, with people grabbing shovels and wheelbarrows to help clear the snow-covered pitch.

I was handed a shovel and told to get on with it, so I began shifting snow off the covers and piling it up on the side of the pitch.

Although it wasn’t the way I’d imagined starting my Friday morning, I soon got into the swing of things and only lost my footing once!

Volunteers continued to turn up throughout the day and progress was good as the the pitch was slowly revealed under the snow swept covers.

Latics fan and volunteer John Billington said: “We just want to help. We realise there’s a fixture pile up so we need to get the game on and we need to win the game.

“We don’t want the fixture congestion but as long as we get three points it’ll all be worth it. And we want the bacon butties!”

Club staff directed operations and kept morale up with refreshments.

Head groundsman Lee Williams said: “We do our best to get the games on and there was a lot of snow to shift.

“We were hopeful before the game. The fans wanted it, the club wanted it, so we were prepared to work until late on Friday with the lights on if we had to to get it on.”
