Radio Dave ‘humbled’ by civic award

Community radio host Dave McGealy admitted being “honoured and humbled” by the presentation of an Oldham Civic Appreciation Award in recognition of his service to the borough.

The Oldham Community Radio presenter relinquished the microphone to fellow volunteer Phil Edmond for the evening while Dave collected his award.

Mr McGealy is only the fourth person to receive the award: “It’s very humbling. This is not something I have done; I was part of a very good team. I’ve had 41 years of tremendous fun and pleasure.”

Born in Fallowfield, Mr McGealy (66) has been involved in community radio for 41 years, starting as a volunteer at Radio Cavell, the pioneering Royal Oldham Hospital radio service, in January 1974.

He set up Oldham’s community radio station between 1994 and 2004 under several names until in March 17 Oldham Community Radio 99.7fm was born.

Council leader Jim McMahon said:: “You’re a true public servant. Your dedication to public service has been acknowledged and appreciated.”
