POLICE have stepped up patrols in Glodwick and Werneth after three mosques and more than 20 homes were broken into with a month.
Ul Aqsa Mosque in Windsor Road, Werneth, was raided on Christmas Eve and £4,000 taken. Jamia Masjid Mosque in Manchester Road had £4,000 stolen on January 4. Thieves struck at Al-Madina Mosque, in Waterloo Street, Glodwick on January 22 and took a charity box.
Mohammed Bashir, of Monmouth Street, who offered £1,000 online to whoever beheaded those responsible for the Jamia Masjid Mosque break-in, has since pleaded guilty to sending a menacing message. He is due to be sentenced on February 24.
Inspector Muz Kernain, of Oldham Central, said: “It’s important for everyone to understand that comprehensive investigations are ongoing. It is important we don’t jump to conclusions and it is always best we work together.”
Residents in the affected areas have set up their own patrols in an attempt to protect their property.
Anyone who sees suspicious activity or requires advice on security should call police on 101 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
