Glued to the screen

TECH savvy Oldham children have swapped outdoor playtime for indoor screen time, says a new survey.

Around 94 per cent of Oldham children spend up to seven hours a day in front of a laptop, tablet or television screen at home. Only 14 per cent of North-West children get out and about to play once a day - less than half that of previous generations.

Parents fare badly too: 57 per cent of adults spend three to five hours of their spare time in front of a screen.

Simon Reeve, renowned explorer and author, said: “It’s heartbreaking to think that children aren’t climbing trees, riding bikes or enjoying the great outdoors anymore.

“Aside from the health benefits of spending time being active outdoors, great memories and stronger bonds are formed through taking part in physical activities.”
