Custody chief cleared
Date published: 20 February 2015
A CUSTODY sergeant has been cleared of assaulting a prisoner who spat at him — but still faces a battle to save his career.
Tony Isaacs (47) was accused of trading blows with Ali Rashedi (24) at Chadderton Police Station on May 5, 2013, after the latter had been arrested following an alleged assault.
Mr Isaacs had gone into Mr Rashedi’s cell to discuss his “volatile” behaviour when the alleged incident occurred.
Crewe magistrates have now found the officer not guilty of a single count of common assault and considered he had been provoked by Rashedi, who admitted spitting in his face and was conditionally discharged.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is now believed to have asked Greater Manchester Police to consider a gross misconduct charge against Sgt Isaacs, which could result in his dismissal. But GMP bosses believe a lower-level misconduct hearing, which cannot end in dismissal, could be more appropriate.
Sergeant Issacs remains on restricted duties.
