Oldhamers got their first glimpse of the new Oldham Sports Centre yesterday when the construction site was opened for visitors.
Builders Willmott Dixon and Oldham Council invited local residents to check out the £15million centre in Cannon Street.
The event was part of an “Open Doors” initiative, which allows the public to see behind the scenes of major construction sites nationwide.
Visitors were treated to a short presentation before touring the worksite.
The centre, which wlll open before the end of the year, will have a 25 metre swimming pool, a learner pool, an 80-station fitness suite, dance and exercise studios, an eight-court sports hall and an indoor bowls hall, as well as wet and dry changing facilities and a cafe.
It will replace the current sports centre on Lord Street, which will close once the new building opens.
