supermarket sweep: the car park will make way for a new store if plans are approved

A NEW Lidl supermarket will be on its way if planning permission is granted later this month.

Plans for the 22,000 sq ft Royton store at land bounded by High Street, Middleton Road and Croft Head, will go before the planning committee on April 15.

Proposals for the former Royton Assembly Hall site also include 100 parking spaces, highway works and landscaping. The former Albion Club, also on the land, will be demolished.

Proposals to build the supermarket were first announced after Oldham Council agreed to sell council-owned land and, along with its Royton regeneration partners Dransfield Properties, worked to secure Lidl as the operator for the long-awaited development. Subject to planning approval and arranging the necessary road closures, it is hoped the store could open by spring, 2016.
