NEARLY there: Kwok Wong tackles a sea of mud in the Major Series 5k event in Wetherby

GETTING down in the mud in a gruelling obstacle course was no sweat for Royton chippy owner Kwok Wong.

Thrill-seeking Kwok, who owns the Ree Ming Chinese takeaway in Oldham Road, tackled the Major Series 5k course in Wetherby with his children, nephew and a family friend.

They helped to raise around £300 for the Breast Cancer Campaign charity - thanks to donations from chip-shop customers.

The event in Wetherby saw more than 500 people take on a course that included cargo-net climbing, log carrying, running through knee-high mud, ducking into a freezing river, crawling under barbed wire and lots more obstacles.

Son Calvin (19) returned from university in Newcastle to support his dad and was joined by Kwok’s daughter Vanessa (16), a Blue Coat school student - as were 17-year-olds Nelson Tsui and Wilson Chung.

Mr Wong (45) said: “It was a good challenge and it was tough because I’m not a runner, but I was encouraged to keep going by my son and daughter.”

Extreme challenges are not unusual for Mr Wong, who has also done skydiving and bungee jumps for charities in the past.

Now he’s preparing for his next challenge — the 10k Total Warrior obstacle course, which takes place in June.
