UCO offers unique £1,000 scholarships

UNIVERSITY Campus Oldham is celebrating its 10th anniversary by offering local students £1,000 scholarships.

The unique scheme is open to students who have attended an Oldham school or college in the last two years and are starting a full-time degree at UCO in September.

It has been backed by former education secretary Estelle Morris, who is heading a commission to transform education in the borough.

UCO claims to provide high-quality higher education at an affordable cost. Fees are £5,995 a year -around £2,705 below the average.

The new scholarships will be paid in three instalments during the student’s first academic year, and some conditions apply

UCO head Debbie Bridge said: “We are proud of our track record as a small higher education institution that punches above its weight. The £1,000 scholarship will make a considerable difference to students anxious about finance.”

Alun Francis, principal of Oldham College - which runs UCO - added: “We need to dramatically change educational routes for Oldham residents, so they can compete for the jobs of the future.

“Over fifty per cent of new jobs over the next decade will require degree-level skills. This scholarship is another extremely important contribution to the long term sustainability of our town.”
