SUPER students were thanked for all their hard work at this year’s Student of the Year Awards.
The event, organised by the Rotary Club of Oldham, acknowledged students who have made an outstanding contribution to the local community or family life while still maintaining high academic standards.
This year, 30 nominations were made by schools in the borough, and two more awards were added because the standard was so high.
The under-18s winner was Hathershaw College pupil Mohammed Usmaan Mahmood, while Oldham Sixth Form student Holly Frazer was the post-16 category winner. They both received a laptop computer at the civic centre ceremony.
Mohammed was recognised for giving up his spare time to raise money for various charities and helping out with youngsters at youth clubs in the borough.
He has been a member of the school’s council for five years and joined three other students in climbing Mount Snowdon for charity on Saturday.
Two special awards were given to Saddleworth School pupil Harrison Quinn (15), and Royton and Crompton School student Emrys Harris-Larkin who both maintain excellent school work while helping out at home to look after their siblings who have special needs. They each received a £50 cheque.
Runners up were Saddleworth School pupils Libby Collard and Emily Brierley.
