Stanley Road Sports Club - to close
THE last pint will be pulled at a Chadderton social club this weekend after 128 years.
And Stanley Road Sports and Social Club bosses are urging people to help it go out on a high with a “grand finale night” from 7.30pm tomorrow. There will be singers, bingo, a raffle and a buffet meal. The club will then open for its final day on Sunday.
The club, formerly Hollinwood and South Chadderton Conservative Club, was opened by Oldham MP James Maclean on April 30, 1887.
Committee member Kath Hodgins (57), a member since the 1980s, was on a new committee formed in August to try to keep the club going: “We fought hard. The staff have been brilliant, they have worked really hard, but unfortunately we have run out of time,” she said.
“It‘s sad to see it go as it is like a family. I have a lot of memories of the club, family parties there with my late husband and father.”
