FOOTBALL legend Paul Scholes did what he does best in a charity football match to honour an inspirational teenager who spent his life helping others.
The former Manchester United midfielder scored a 20-yard “screamer” to seal a 7-5 win against a Man City Legends team captained by former player Peter Barnes at Mossley’s Seel Park ground.
Scholes was playing for an Alex Williams All Star team — a young man who suffered a stroke and died in August 2012, aged 18.
Alex had campaigned for the Meningitis Trust as a young ambassador and helped spread awareness of Alex, who enjoyed playing football, refused to let his disability be a barrier and replaced football with wheelchair basketball at Oldham Owls.
The charity match raised money for Alex’s charity the Believe and Achieve Trust, which helps those affected by meningitis who wish to succeed in sport.
Organised by Mossley kit man Gareth Worrall, a close family friend of Alex, more than 500 people turned up to watch the game.
Gareth said: “It was absolutely fantastic, there was loads of people. I could not have asked for it to go any better.”
