Sharon’s sneak peek at £28.5m cancer centre

A NEW £28.5 million cancer research centre in Manchester will be officially unveiled this week - but one Oldham cancer survivor got a tour today.

The University of Manchester building in Withington will be home to researchers from the Manchester Cancer Research Centre, a partnership between Cancer Research UK, the University of Manchester and the Christie NHS Foundation Trust.

The state of the art facility, opposite the hospital in Wilmslow Road, is set to bring more world-class scientists to the city, boosting research and helping to improve treatments.

Director of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre, Professor Nic Jones, said: “It looks absolutely fantastic. The new research centre will make a tremendous difference to the way cancer is treated in the future.

Sharon, from Chadderton, was be one of the first to tour the facility after surviving breast cancer since 2000.

Sharon was diagnosed two years after her mum, Audrey, had also been diagnosed and successfully treated.

Sharon (51), who works at North Manchester General Hospital, said: “Being involved in the opening of such a prestigious building is an honour. Research is key, and I’m keen to let people know that cancer doesn’t need to be a death sentence.”

The new building will enable researchers the chance to work closely together. Cancer experts will be able to use a comprehensive array of new technologies and equipment. An open day will be held in the new building on Saturday (10am-4pm).
