£5m boost for cancer research

CANCER treatment has been given a £5milllion boost by Cancer Research UK to help transform “personalised” local medicine.

The news follows the recent launch of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre in Withington, opposite the entrance to the main Christies buildings. The MCRC will maximise the sharing of ideas and collaborations between scientists and clinicians.

The Cancer Research UK Manchester Centre, based inside the new building, is one of the first centres to gain “Major Centre” status and will receive an extra £5million over two years.

Professor Nic Jones, chief scientist at Cancer Research UK and director of the Cancer Research UK Manchester Centre, said: “The centre will invest not only in collaborative and innovative research, but in the next generation of world leaders in cancer detection, treatment and prevention.”
