Games success for pupils

OLDHAM made its mark on the Greater Manchester Sainsbury’s School Games.

Nearly 2,000 pupils from across Greater Manchester gathered at the regional athletics arena at Sports City for the opening ceremony of the 2015 school games.

Early rain cleared and the the majority of the competitions when ahead as planned with Oldham pupils showing the rest of the region what they could do.

Radcliffe School won the years 10-11 goalball and year seven to nine kurling (a version of the game for any flat surface), as well as winning third place in the years seven to nine goalball. Oasis Academy came second in the year seven and eight girls’ dodgeball.

Oldham Broadfield Primary School was second in the kurling, while Hodge Clough Primary School was came third in the golf.

Royton and Crompton won the girls handball for years seven and eight, while Crompton House took the years seven and eight handball competiton. Also on the podium were Saddleworth School - second in the year seven and eight tennis and Waterhead Academy, second in the year seven to nine sitting volleyball.

Yvonne Harrison, chief executive of GreaterSport said: “It was fantastic to see so many schools from across Greater Manchester taking part.”

The National Sainsbury’s School Games returns to Manchester on September 3-6, 2015.
