Dashboard cam rumbled scam
Date published: 10 August 2015
A DASHBOARD camera helped nab three Oldhamers who planned a “crash for cash” scam.
Victim Gary Chung was driving his Vauxhall Corsa along busy Chester Road in Hulme when the woman driver of a silver Audi in front made an emergency stop without reason. Mr Chung had no chance to avoid a collision - a second member of the trio was blocking his way in a second Audi in the inside lane.
Manchester Crown Court heard Mr Chung’s dashboard camera recorded the crash in June 2011, and an independent witness told police the accident appeared to have been staged.
Claims were made against Mr Chung’s insurance company, but the plot was uncovered before the claim was settled.
Khan (30), of Eric Street, Oldham pleaded guilty to fraud. and was sentenced to 14 months in prison, suspended for two years.
Judge Angela Nield told her: “That there was a camera in the car was good fortune, but this was a wicked and dangerous practice.”
The two others involved will be sentenced next month.
