Homewatch support ‘vital’

CONCERNS have been raised over the relationship between police and Homewatch in Saddleworth by one a neighbourhood coordinator.
Royce Franklin, chair of the Saddleworth and Lees group, said: “For some time I’ve been dissatisfied with the role the police have taken with Homewatch. There’s no doubt the police have had to endure savage cuts in the past five years and these are likely to intensify. The irony is they need the community more than ever because of this.
“I’m also concerned Homewatch doesn’t have a very high profile in Saddleworth, but this isn’t a reflection a lack of commitment by local PCSOs.’
But the relationship has been defended by Chief Insp Jim Troisi of Oldham Division, who revealed the force was hoping to appoint a volunteer to help.
“We fully support the objectives of Homewatch and are still very much present at meetings. We still recognise the value of face to face communication with residents. We are looking at bringing in a volunteer to replace the old paid position and help to forge stronger relationships with communities.”
The news follows co-ordinator Shirley Holt’s appeal for more members. She said: “I’ve seen a lot of changes in the police since I became involved and I understand the difficulties they are facing.
“The community is going to be relied on more and more to help tackle crime. Getting involved gives people a sense of security and peace of mind..
