‘Bionic’ Phil swims for his rescuers

Saddleworth’s own ‘bionic man’ made waves yesterday to raise money for the dedicated rescue teams who saved his life.

Phil Beard had set a target of 60 minutes to complete his 100 length charity swim - and to the delight of colleagues from Oldham Mountain Rescue Team, Phil (60), achieved his goal in 52 minutes 28 seconds in the 25-metre pool.

Phil, one of the team’s longest serving members, survived a hairaising 60 ft fall on a training exercise at Upperwood Quarry near Dovestone.

Phil suffered a fractured pelvis and 25 other fractures and had two metal rods inserted into his spine to hold a crushed spinal bine in place.

He was treated and carried to safety by his own team and the North West Air Ambulance.

And brave-hearted Phil, accompanied by his proud wife Wendy and son, Jamie, was applauded as he completed his personal challenge at Saddleworth Pool, Uppermill.

OMRT’s leader Mick Nield said.” Phil’s efforts were truly outstanding. He is a real example of courage.”

Speaking after his solo marathon, Phil, said there had been a flood of support for his fundraiser from locals: “I don’t know how much has been raised so far,” he said.” But people have been very generous and money is still coming in.”
