PUNISHMENTS have been doled out to nine people who dropped litter in Oldham town centre.

Proceedings were launched after all nine failed to pay an £80 fixed penalty notice issued by enforcement officers. The cases were heard at Oldham Magistrates’ Court.

Charles McAuley (49), of Balfour Street, Clarksfield, was given a six-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £100 costs.

Charlotte Hainsworth (23), of Rochdale Road, Coldhurst, was fined £200 plus £250 costs, as were Nazmeen Akhtar (26), of Hardy Street, Glodwick, Christopher Pass (39) of Rosary Road, Fitton Hill, Roy Carpenter (52), from Rochdale, Adrian Hill (50), of Dob Brook Close, Newton Heath, and Fiona McGowan (55), of Hadfield Street, Hathershaw and Gaetano Marino (39).

Jodie Bertenshaw (27), of Stag Pasture Road, Limeside gave false details after dropping a drink can. She was fined £150 for littering, £150 for providing false details and £250 costs.

Others were prosecuted for breaches of environmental health laws, notably Mohammed Ali of Abbey Hills Road, who admitted failing to take reasonable precautions to ensure waste was disposed of correctly. He paid an unknown man to remove renovation waste from his house, which was later found dumped near Warren Lane. He was fined £280, with £776 costs. Fined a similar amount for a similar offence was Tariq Mahmood (47) of Rochdale.
