Oldham Council is urging claimants to report changes to their circumstances that could have an effect on benefits
Oldham has joined forces with nine councils across the region in a Government-led initiative scheme to reduce fraud and errors that cause over- or under-payment.
A recent report showed ousing benefit loss due to fraud and error is at a record high - about £1.45 billion, six per cent of total government expenditure on benefits.
Councillor Abdul Jabbar, cabinet member for finance, said the problem works both ways: “We know there are residents missing out on housing benefit they are entitled to due to a change in personal circumstances. If you aren’t sure I’d urge you to get in touch to see if we can help.
“On the other hand if you know you are no longer entitled to full housing benefit, contact us. It’s against the law to claim more than you are entitled to.”
