WEARING their heroes’ colours of red and white, Roughyeds fans packed into the tight surrounds of Whitebank to help create Oldham Rugby League Club history.
Supporters’ cheers rang out load and proud at the final hooter in celebration of Oldham’s promotion to the Kingstone Press Championship after a 31-20 victory over Keighley Cougars.
After six final defeats in the last eight years, elation was mixed with a huge sense of relief that the club had finally achieved promotion.
Grant Somerville summed up perfectly the feelings of many of the fans present yesterday: “It’s an absolutely magnificent achievement that negates all those occasions when we had been so close before.”
Fans also took to Twitter to express their delight at Oldham’s victory in the Promotion Final.
Gerry Jones simply posted “CHAMPIONS”, while former Roughyeds player Mo Agoro put “buzzing for the boys — about time it happened.”
