Organisers of a musical production have praised Oldham Council officers for saving their autumn show.
Officials have come the rescue as overnight closures of Uppermill High Street begin for road resurfacing. Phase two of the work is scheduled to start on October 26 and would have closed the entrance to Saddleworth School - the day before the opening of “SMS Pinafore” at the school by Saddleworth Musical Society.
The soceity was worried that the works might disrupt performances as there would be no access for cars. But council officers and the producers have come to an arrangement and the show will go on.
Road closures at the Brownhill Centre and New Street will come into operation at 7.30pm, which will allow vehicles through in both directions in time for the show. Work will continue until 10pm, so audience members can leave.
Councillor Dave Hibbert, cabinet member for transport, said: “I’m pleased Saddleworth Musical Society is happy. We understand these works will cause some disruption but they are necessary to ensure roads are kept to a high standard. We’ve tried to minimise that impact.”
