Police hunt gunman after bank robbery attempt
Date published: 26 June 2008
AN ARMED robber pointed a gun at staff at Shaw’s Barclays Bank before a smoke alarm was set off during a bungled raid.
The man struck at the High Street branch at just after 9.30am yesterday, but escaped empty-handed.
He walked into the bank before putting on a black balaclava and taking out a handgun, which he used to threaten bank staff. He then shouted “money”.
The woman behind the counter immediately pressed the alarm, which activated a smoke device.
As the bank filled with smoke, the offender ran out of the door. It is believed he made-off down an alleyway beside a shop on Market Street.
No-one was hurt during the attempted robbery and police are studying CCTV footage of the incident.
The offender is described as white and 5ft 9ins tall. He was wearing a blue waterproof jacket, blue jeans, black shoes and was carrying a royal blue rucksack.
Detective Sergeant Lindsey Curry, of Oldham CID, said: “If it wasn’t for the quick thinking actions of staff this incident could have been much worse.
“This man seems to think nothing of brandishing a gun and he needs to be held accountable for his actions.
“If anyone saw the offender as he ran out of the bank and down Market Street, or recognises him from the description, please get in touch.”
It’s the third time in four years the bank has been attacked, following armed robberies in 2004 and 2005.
In March, a customer had a knife held to her throat during an armed robbery at the Halifax Bank, Market Street, Shaw, when three men stole a substantial amount of cash.
If anyone has any information about the incident, or the offender, contact Oldham CID on 0161 856 8951 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
