Alert as bypass shuts for bridge upgrade

MOTORISTS should avoid Oldham Way this weekend, which will be closed while the Union Street West footbridge is refurbished.

Oldham Way will be closed from 7pm Saturday until 5am Monday. The footbridge will be shut from 8am Saturday to 5am Monday. If the work isn’t completed, the road will close again from 7pm on November 6 until 5am on November 9. Early next year a new parapet will be installed and more painting completed.

Since construction in 1999, the bridge has been costly to maintain because of its glass panels. These will be removed and the bridge left open to the elements.
