Boxing club’s Cuba mission
Date published: 30 October 2015
AN OLDHAM boxing club is hoping to take a team of promising fighters to the spiritual home of amateur boxing, Cuba.
Coaches at the Greaves Street gym are hoping to organise the trip for next year - the result of a holiday head coach Eric Noi had there some years ago.
Eric said: “I took the opportunity to visit a couple of the gyms in Havana. I was bowled over by what I saw. The gyms have hardly any equipment compared with here, but the the boxers were amazing.
“I’ve kept in touch with some of the people I met and they have invited me to take a team over.
“This would be a great opportunity for Oldham youngsters to visit the other side of the world and now we need the support of residents to make sure it happens.
“We are going to be doing loads of things to raise money for the trip but we can’t do it alone. We know times are hard financially but any help anyone can give us would be appreciated.”
