Syed Adnan Mashrur who was attacked at Newbold Tram Station
THE family of a student from Chadderton is too scared to let him travel on his own after he was attacked by thugs at a tram stop.
Syed Adnan Mashrur (19), a former North Chadderton School student, was travelling home from the University of Bradford and caught a tram at Rochdale. As it pulled into Newbold Station a white teenager around his age started swearing at Syed through the window. he leaned in and asked him for a fight.
When Syed went out to say he didn’t want to fight, he was attacked by a group of seven young men.
Syed, from Briarmere Walk in Chadderton, said: “I can’t remember much, I had a concussion. When I was gaining consciousness someone was asking if I was all right. I was bleeding.”
Syed called his cousin to pick him up but by then the police had arrived to check another attack nearby.
Syed had to take a week off university to recover at home.
“My family were shocked,” he added. “My parents were so worried, they took me to Bradford.
“I’ve dealt with racism as a kid when we first moved here, but nothing like this. I thought that was only because we were young and kids can be stupid. You don’t think people still do it at this age.”
A spokesman from Greater Manchester Police confirmed they are investigating the incident and it is being treated as an assault. No arrests have yet been made.
